Padua is getting ready to host one of the most anticipated artistic events of the cultural season. In autumn 2026, the historic Palazzo Zabarella opens its doors to a major monographic exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Max Pechstein (1881–1955), a leading figure of the Expressionist movement and a celebrated member of the group Die Brücke (The Bridge).
The exhibition offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore over fifty years of the German artist’s career through a rich and detailed display. On show are over 120 works, including vibrant paintings, watercolors, drawings, powerful prints, period photographs, sketches, and personal items that reveal both the creative process and the intense life of a master who helped shape modern visual language.
Born in Zwickau and trained in Dresden, Max Pechstein quickly distanced himself from rigid academic traditions to join the young revolutionaries of Die Brücke. A free spirit and tireless traveler, Pechstein visited Italy and stayed in Paris, where he encountered firsthand the artistic legacies of Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Paul Gauguin. In 1908, he settled in Berlin, becoming one of Expressionism’s most recognized and acclaimed interpreters.
His creative vision drew vital inspiration from his extensive travels, from the idyllic shores of the Baltic Sea to the South Seas. What Pechstein considered untouched paradises became the primary muse for his work, reflecting a deep desire to escape urban frenzy. However, his career suffered dramatic setbacks during the two World Wars: under the Nazi regime, his art was branded as “degenerate,” leading to the revocation of his professorship at the Berlin Academy of Arts. It was only after World War II that he was reinstated and received full recognition for his contribution to European culture.
The exhibition at Palazzo Zabarella highlights his constant search for a harmonious connection between humanity and the natural landscape-conceived as a poetic response to the historical turmoil of his era. It carries a deeply contemporary message that continues to resonate powerfully in today’s world.
